I feel like the second playthrough, if you up the difficulty, is closer to what the experience they expect you to have. Like i said, spend your first play through enjoying it. The haze you need to level up increases per level, but the amount rewarded by your enemies will progress significantly too, as you get to new enemies. Spend your first playthrough going through and actually taking time to enjoy the game, level ups look nice to do, and after a lot of them they make a difference, but it takes a good bit of progress to feel like you actually need to level up. My take, the first play through of the game, is a rpg type experience, you get weapons, skills, blood veils, and then all the upgrades/transformations as well.
